SUMMARY:Book Talk: "To Have A Tomorrow" with author Gene Fisch
DESCRIPTION:Onondaga Historical Association is pleased to invite the community to a free public lecture and book signing\, featuring Gene Fisch and his new book\, To Have A Tomorrow: A True Story. Join us at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday\, January 7th at the organization’s comprehensive history museum at 321 Montgomery Street in Downtown Syracuse. There\, you’ll be able to pick up a copy of To Have A Tomorrow from our Gift Gallery\, get it signed\, and listen to the author’s insights about the book. \nA note from the author’s website: “This book is the story of what my family and I experienced in one of the most terrifying and devastating of times— the period just before and during the cataclysm that was World War II\, when my first home\, Poland\, and her people were caught between the aggression and atrocities of the Nazis in Germany and the cruelty and state-sponsored violence of the Soviet Union’s occupations\, deportations\, relocations\, deaths by starvation\, freezing and mass executions\, concealed from worldwide media during the first twenty-two months of the Second World War. Most compelling about our survival\, was not that a family of six survived intact three brutal occupations\, even while one of three Polish citizens were left behind in silent graves\, it is how my parents kept us alive during those terrible times—never betraying those values embedded in their souls\, their faith\, their love of country\, love of family\, and love of life—at a time in history that witnessed an allout attempt at the destruction of thirty-five million Slavic citizens of eastern Poland. The story follows our lives into the immediate post-war years as displaced persons in Germany and\, finally\, as refugees in the United States.”

SUMMARY:"Floor Burns" Book Talk with Author M.C. Antil
DESCRIPTION:Join OHA as we welcome M.C. Antil\, author of Floor Burns: Love\, Passion and the 1967 Syracuse All-City Championship. The book has been described as “a sprawling\, affectionate…portrait of a city being transformed by the 1960s\, the people who lived there\, and the game they loved”. This work is a non-fiction account of a high school championship basketball game. \nFloor Burns is a basketball story\, to be sure.  But it is also a “virtual love letter” to Syracuse\, the story of a small working-class city\, its people\, and the turbulent times they shared. \nCome to the Onondaga Historical Museum on March 3rd to listen to M.C. Antil’s book talk and learn about the story of the 1967 Syracuse All-City Championship. The event\, from 4:30 to 6:30\, includes an author presentation\, refreshments\, and the chance to browse our Gift Gallery. Of course\, we’ll also have plenty of copies of Floor Burns ready for the author to sign! \nWant more history? Enjoy the second half of this double feature\, the gallery opening of our new exhibit\, A Pocketful of Progress: A Retrospective Look at the Machines Found in our Smartphones! The gallery opening will take place at the museum directly after the book talk\, and celebrates this new\, technology-focused exhibit. A Pocketful of Progress demonstrates the advancements we’ve made in technology in the past 150 years. It showcases a wide range of machines – many of which were built right here in Syracuse – that have been necessary to complete the myriad tasks now done on our smartphones. \nThe is a free event! Please RSVP to ohamuseum@cnyhistory.org if you will be coming to one or both of these events! For the safety of all our staff and patrons\, you must show proof of vaccination in order to attend. \nOnondaga Historical Association’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt\, the boisterous and mostly beloved legendary American hero\, accused his former friend and ally\, turned rival\, Republican Party leader William Barnes of political corruption. The furious Barnes responded by suing Roosevelt for an enormous sum that could have financially devastated him. \nThe spectacle of Teddy Roosevelt\, defending his legacy captured the imagination of the nation. “No more dramatic courtroom scene has ever been enacted\,” reported the Syracuse Herald on May 22\, 1915 as it covered “the greatest libel suit in history.”

SUMMARY:Book Talk & Signing: An Oneida Indian in Foreign Waters: The Life of Chief Chapman Scanandoah with Author Laurence Hauptman
DESCRIPTION:On April 5th\, 2017 at 6:00 pm\, the Onondaga Historical Association\, in cooperation with Syracuse University Press\, will host a book talk and signing book with author Laurence Hauptman on his book\, An Oneida Indian in Foreign Waters: The Life of Chief Chapman Scanandoah\, 1870-1953. \nThe event will take place at the Skä•noñh-Great Law of Peace Center on Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool\, New York. \nAbout the book: Chapman Scanandoah was an outsider at the primarily African American Hampton Institute where he was educated in the late 1880s and early 1890s; one of the very few Native Americans in the US Navy from 1897 to 1912; an Oneida with no land or political rights on the Onondaga Reservation\, where he resided for much of his life; a litigant in the white man’s court attempting to prevent the loss of the last remaining Oneida lands in the Empire State; a Native American inventor earning patents in the age of Thomas Edison; one of the founders of the Indian Village at the New York State Fair; and a valued employee and mechanic working for major companies in Schenectady and Syracuse. While he was traveling in all of these “foreign waters\,” he was serving his Oneida people as the primary advisor to Chief William Hanyoust Rockwell. \nReviews:  \n“In this book\, we have that very rare thing: the biography of a Native American figure who moved through what I have called ‘the many worlds of the Iroquois.’”—Michael Leroy Oberg\, author of Peacemakers: The Iroquois\, the United States\, and the Treaty of Canandaigua\, 1794 \n“Widely admired for combining meticulous research with deep sympathy for his subject\, Hauptman is the foremost historian of recent Iroquois history. Now he has given us a work illuminating the notable life of Chapman Scanandoah. . . . This book casts new light on neglected chapters of the Oneida land claims story.”—Anthony Wonderley\, author of Oneida Iroquois Folklore\, Myth\, and History: New York Oral Narrative from the Notes of H. E. Allen and Others \n  \nAbout the author: Laurence M. Hauptman is SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History. SUMMARY:Book Launch: The Soul of Central New York - Syracuse Stories with Author Sean Kirst
DESCRIPTION:A group of strangers risk death along the New York State Thruway to save a soldier from a burning truck. The true story\, as told by football legend Jim Brown\, of how the number 44 rose to prominence at Syracuse University. The beautiful yet tragic connection between Vice President Joseph Biden and Syracuse. The impossible account of how Eric Carle\, one of the world’s great children’s authors\, found his way to a childhood friend through a photograph taken in Syracuse more than eighty years ago. \nAll these tales can be found in The Soul of Central New York\, a collection of columns by Sean Kirst that spans almost a quarter-century. During his long career as a writer for the Syracuse Post-Standard\, Kirst won some of the most prestigious honors in journalism\, including the Ernie Pyle Award\, given annually to one American writer who best captures the hopes and dreams of everyday Americans. \nFor Kirst\, his canvas is Syracuse\, an upstate city of staggering beauty and profound struggle. In this book\, readers will find a nuanced explanation of how Syracuse is intertwined with the spiritual roots of the Six Nations\, as well as a soliloquy from a grieving father whose son was lost to violence on the streets. In these emotional contradictions―in the resilience\, love\, and heart-break of its people―Kirst offers a vivid portrait of his city and\, in the end\, gives readers hope. \nReviews: (via Amazon) \n– Sean elegantly and accurately captures the spirit\, resilience\, and aspirations characterizing the souls of Upstate New York. (Mayor Stephanie A. Miner Syracuse\, New York) \n–  Kirst not only shares with readers his love and passion for the people\, places\, and voices of his hometown\, but captures the essence of what it is to be a community. (Jason Emerson author of Giant in the Shadows: The Life of Robert T. Lincoln) \n– Sean Kirst is a master storyteller. The sheer beauty of any Sean Kirst column is what you learn from the people he introduces you to. There are no strangers in this book; Sean makes you feel like you’ve known them all. There is quiet wisdom and eternal hope on every page. And\, pride too … because the men\, women and children in these stories have lived among us in Central New York: They’re our neighbors. These are stories of life’s simple pleasures enjoyed and incredible odds overcome. Some life lessons and timeless human values can only be learned when one generation tells its stories to the next. That’s what Sean Kirst does so magnificently well. This collection is truly a treasure. (Dan CummingsAnchor/Reporter WSYR-TV) \n– Sean Kirst has frequently been called an extraordinary storyteller\, and The Soul of Central New York: Syracuse Stories by Sean Kirst certainly conveys Sean’s ability to capture the reader’s attention through powerful\, life-changing stories. However\, reading this book will show you that Sean is much more than a storyteller. He is a truth teller\, and his writing does more than entertain or influence. Sean’s writing is profound and gently but firmly calls us to acknowledge pain and injustice and to commit to do something about it. If you read one book this year\, make it this one. (Randi Bregman Executive Director of Vera House\, Inc.) \n– Kirst demonstrates an extraordinary connection with his readers and subjects. How wonderful it would be for any community to have such an artful chronicler of its poignant moments. (Janice Bullard Pieterse author of Our Work Is But Begun: A History of the University of Rochester\, 1850–2005) \n– Every time I talk to Sean\, I learn something about myself. His deep\, long-range understanding of people and the city of Syracuse is a beautiful thing. Every city should have a Sean Kirst. (Jason Benetti\, Chicago White Sox TV announcer and former Syracuse resident) \n– Anyone lucky enough to read Sean Kirst’s columns over the past 25 years know he’s truly the Bard of Upstate America\, sharing stories of love\, loss\, friendship and fealty that tell the modern history of our region. The Soul of Central New York gathers the best of these stories\, led by familiar characters like Jim Boeheim to the quiet heroes of our community\, in a collection that captures a place and people whose beauty are both ever-fleeting and ever-present. (Jimmy Vielkind Albany Bureau Chief\, POLITICO)
