The evening will include a book talk by exhibit curator\, Dr. Kent Blansett\, on his latest book\, which is the first published biography of Richard Oakes\, entitled: A Journey to Freedom: Richard Oakes\, Alcatraz\, and the Red Power Movement.  \nThe gift shop will have copies available for purchase.  \nThe opening reception is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Native Artists Exhibit Opening featuring work by Nancy Duffy\, Ronnie-Leigh Goeman\, and Stonehorse Goeman. 
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we start the New Year off with a co-exhibition from three local artists on Wednesday\, January 3rd. Artists include the late Nancy Duffy\, Ronnie-Leigh Goeman\, and Stonehorse Goeman. \nDuffy was a former resident of Syracuse and worked at News Channel 9. She is best known as the woman who put together the largest one-day event in Syracuse\, New York – the St. Patrick’s Day Parade – which is held annually in downtown Syracuse. She created a collection of chalk and charcoal drawings that features portraits from people that belong to one of the six nations within the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The portraits include\, but are not limited to\, Irving Powless Jr.\, Oren Lyons\, Audrey Shenandoah\, Alice Papineau\, Leon Shenandoah\, and Ray Elm. \nThe exhibit will also feature work by Ronnie-Leigh and Stonehorse Goeman. Although Ronnie-Leigh uses traditional Iroquois methods of basket making\, she has evolved and elevated her art to another level\, in that she collaborates and incorporates the work of Stonehorse Goeman. Stonehorse sculpts the bases for the baskets\, thus creating “basket sculpture.” Each basket is elaborately woven\, using ash\, sweet grass\, and embellished with moose hair and quill. Her baskets bring to light the subject of invasive species threatening the native tree and plant life\, thus threatening the cultural future for learning the art of basketry. \nIf you have questions about events at the Center\, please call 315-453-6767 or 315-428-1864. \n

SUMMARY:Judaic Heritage Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception for From Laying the Foundation to Forging Ahead: Jewish Contributions to Syracuse & Onondaga County on October 24th from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe exhibit\, located on the first floor of the Onondaga Historical Museum\, emphasizes the Jewish role in advancing the social\, religious\, economic\, and political fabric of Syracuse and Onondaga County\, and is divided into four sections: Community\, Business\, Entertainment\, and Athletics. For instance\, Communityfocuses on the old Jewish neighborhood\, synagogues\, and people. Business concentrates on small to large Jewish-owned retail stores\, factories\, and other businesses such as Flah’s\, Fleischman’s\, SYROCO\, Oberdorfer Foundry\, and United Radio.  Entertainment highlights local and nationally-known song and comedy writers\, authors\, actors\, and singers such as Harold Arlen who wrote Somewhere Over the Rainbow\, Sime Silverman who founded Variety magazine\, and the Shubert brothers who amassed the largest theatrical empire in America.  Athletics features several local Jewish athletes and sports teams such as Dolph & Danny Schayes\, Myer Prinstein\, Dave Brodsky\, and the Young Men’s Hebrew Association’s championship basketball team. \nOHA would like to thank Howard Port\, Mike Moss\, and Linda Alexander for their knowledge of the content and much-welcomed assistance\, Ann Eppinger Port for her proofreading skills and editorial comments when reviewing the exhibit text\, and everyone from the Jewish community who contributed photographs and text for the exhibit.  OHA also would like to thank Alex Lyon & Son\, Inc.; The Jerome & Phyllis Charney Foundation; Arlene & Jerome R. Gerber Foundation; The Dorothy & Marshall M.
