SUMMARY:Finding A Way Forward: The Conflict and Commemoration of America250
DESCRIPTION:Join the Onondaga Historical Association on Wednesday\, November 12 at 7:30 PM in the Wells Meeting Space at the Sky Armory\, Syracuse\, NY for an engaging discussion on the commemoration of America250 in polarizing times. \nIn 2026\, America250 marks the Semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. Activities will be filled with reflections on the conflicts and formative events that shaped the United States and American democracy\, and who we recognize as our heroes. How will communities navigate the diverging narratives of our history as we prepare for this milestone year? History\, education\, and public art have become flashpoints for national and local conflict. How will the story of America be interpreted and discussed in commemorative programs\, events and public spaces? \nTim Phillips\, founder of the global nonprofit Beyond Conflict\, and Monique VanLandingham\, Senior Advisor at the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation\, will share insights from their international work in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. They will discuss how these approaches can help communities address the complex challenges of commemoration and collective memory as America250 draws near. \n  \nEvent Details: \n\nDate and Time: Wednesday\, November 12 | 7:30 PM\nLocation: Sky Armory’s Wells Meeting Space\, 351 S. SUMMARY:Lincoln on the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Onondaga Historical Association Museum and Research Center is pleased to offer another installment of “Lincoln on the Civil War\,” a reading and discussion series developed and sponsored by a grant from Humanities New York. “With its thematic focus\, this reading and discussion program offers an unusual twist on the standard book group format by making time for thinking deeply about one idea\, over time\, from a variety of perspectives\,” says Sara Ogger\, executive director of Humanities New York. Something special happens when we talk about what we read with others in our community. Humanities New York’s Adult Reading & Discussion programs are designed to foster active reading and thinking\, incorporating texts that serve as catalysts for civic engagement\, cultural understanding\, and personal reflection. Adult Reading & Discussion programs are held in communities across New York State.  \nAt O.H.A.’s museum at 321 Montgomery Street\, participants will come together over the course of sessions to discuss a variety of thematically linked texts with Robert Searing\, Curator of History for O.H.A.\, and adjunct history faculty at Tompkins Cortland Community College. Reading\, analyzing\, and discussing Lincoln’s own speeches\, participants will explore the growing sectional controversy over the expansion of slavery and Lincoln’s evolution on the subject between 1838 and 1860.  After his election to the House of Representatives in 1846\, Lincoln became an important figure in the growing anti-slavery movement and eventually joined the newly formed Republican Party\, which opposed the spread of slavery.  \nThis series allows participants to examine and appreciate anew the rhetoric\, political skill\, and evolution of the sixteenth president during one the nation’s most tumultuous political eras. His words are a window into the mind of a cagey politician\, and a gifted writer and speaker on the most significant issues that led to the Civil War. Themes include the nature of democratic participation; concepts of political equality; political polarization and  navigating the turbulent partisanship and regionalism of the antebellum era; slavery and abolition; the secession crisis and Lincoln’s views on the nature of the Union; the causes and the legacy of the nation’s bloodiest war; His views on Reconstruction and\, finally\, the task of “binding up the nation’s wounds” and protecting the newly won citizenship of African Americans at the close of the war. \nThe dates for these sessions are 2/12\, 2/21\, 3/6\, 3/19\, and 4/3 @ 6 pm. There are 12 slots available and they will fill up quickly. The sessions will last approximately 60-75 minutes. These sessions will last approximately 60-75 minutes and build on one another. The generous grant means that the texts will be loaned to participants at no additional cost. \nThe program is free and open to the public\, although pre-registration is required.  For more information about the series dates and acquiring books before hand\, please contact Robert J. Searing at (315)428-1863 ext. 310 or robert.searing@cnyhistory.org \nFor more information about “Lincoln on the Civil War” and other reading and discussion grants visit www.humanitiesny.org \n   \nAny views\, findings\, conclusions\, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of either Humanities New York or the National Endowment for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Rock of the Marne Monument Rededication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:On July 15th\, join OHA and the Syracuse community as we rededicate the Rock of the Marne Monument in Billings Park 98 years after it was erected (1920) and 100 years after the Second Battle of the Marne (1918). The monument is on the corner of South Salina and East Adams streets. \nThe ceremony will celebrate the replacement of a once lost plaque\, the unveiling of a new plaque which commemorates the 100th anniversary\, and a program featuring Sean Kirst\, General Quintas 3rd Infantry Division\, and Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens. \nThis free event will also include musical entertainment and refreshments for sale by Gannon’s Ice Cream and Donny’s Dogs. \nAbout the monument: On July 15\, 1920\, the “Rock of the Marne” monument\, created by Roland Hilton Perry was dedicated by men of the 38th Infantry Regiment\, 3rd Infantry Division\, in Billings Park at South Salina\, South Warren and East Adams streets. The unit earned the nickname “Rock of the Marne” because of its resolve to hold its ground at the Second Battle of the Marne River near Paris\, France on July 15\, 1918 in the face of the last massive German offensive of World War I. \nThe 38th Infantry Regiment chose to donate the monument to the city because men of that unit were trained at the State Fairgrounds\, near Syracuse.

SUMMARY:Ben Walsh to Sign Mayor's Autograph Book
DESCRIPTION:On February 21s\, 2018\, Ben Walsh will become the 52nd Mayor of Syracuse to sign the “Mayor’s Autograph Book.” This book has the autograph of every Mayor of Syracuse since the first Mayor\, Harvey Baldwin\, in 1848. \nThe signing will take place at the Onondaga Historical Museum at 321 Montgomery Street in downtown Syracuse at 10 AM. The event is open to the public. \nMayor Walsh will sign the book on a mid-19th century desk used in the United States House of Representatives from Onondaga Historical Association’s (OHA) collection. Ben’s father\, James\, represented New York’s 25th congressional district from 1993 to 2008. \nWalsh has made history in his short time as Syracuse’s mayor. Ben’s grandfather\, William Francis Walsh\, was Syracuse’s mayor from 1962 to 1969\, making Ben the first descendant of a mayor to lead City Hall. Mayor Walsh is also the first minor-party candidate elected since Louis Will in 1913\, who represented the Progressive Party. \nA number of objects from OHA’s collection will be on display\, including a chair used by Syracuse’s first mayor in 1848\, Harvey Baldwin. \nThis legacy of signatures reminds us of our community’s challenges\, but also of its dreams and accomplishments. The signatures help us remember that these were real people who struggled with the serious issues of their day\, just as our present leaders have their own challenges. And\, although their names may not be familiar to the average citizen today\, their decisions have a legacy that still impacts us in the 21st century. \nOHA will also be making major announcement during the event.
