SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Kokom Lena of the First Nation Algonquin"
DESCRIPTION:For 20 years\, Syracuse photographer Michael Greenlar documented four generations of Algonquins in the bush of Quebec\, Canada. His work focuses on the matriarch\, Lena Nottaway\, and the knowledge she passed on through her 15 children. Lena taught Kokomville how to utilize every element of the environment to become a self-sustaining community. The series of photographs is a testament to the cultural survival of the Algonquin people of Barrier Lake\, La Vérendrye Park\, Quebec\, Canada. Despite broken treaties and clear-cut logging\, these First Nation people continue to use the land as their traditions dictate. \nThe exhibition is in partnership with Art Rage Gallery. Both exhibits have unique photos of Greenlar’s documentation.\n\nGreenlar will be speaking beginning at 3:15pm. His book will also be for sale at the Center’s gift gallery.

SUMMARY:Possessing Harriet First Full Preview Performance & VIP Reception
DESCRIPTION:On October 17th\, the OHA commissioned play\, Possessing Harriet\, written by Kyle Bass\, will have its first full preview performance. On the night of the full preview\, OHA will be holding a special VIP Reception to celebrate the occasion as well as the 179th anniversary of this historic event. Tickets are $100 and include the VIP Reception and access to the performance. You can purchase your tickets below. \nThank you the following sponsors: \n \n \n \nNational Grid\n  \nClick here for Possessing Harriet Sponsorship Information \nAbout the play: In October 1839\, Harriet Powell\, a young\, mixed-race\, enslaved woman slips away from a hotel in Syracuse\, New York\, and escapes from the Southerner who owns her. With the aid of a mysterious free black man named Thomas Leonard\, Harriet finds temporary safe harbor in an attic room at the home of impassioned abolitionist Gerrit Smith. With the slave catchers in pursuit\, Harriet awaits her nighttime departure on the dangerous journey to Canada in the company of Smith’s young cousin Elizabeth Cady\, an outspoken advocate for women’s equality. Confronted with new and difficult ideas about race\, identity\, and equality\, and with confusion\, fear\, and desperation multiplying\, Harriet is forced to the precipice of radical self-re-imagination and a reckoning with the heartrending cost of freedom. A world premiere by award-winning playwright and Syracuse Stage associate artistic director Kyle Bass. \nCredits\nBy : Kyle Bass \nDirected by : Tazewell Thompson \nCommissioned by : The Onondaga Historical Association

SUMMARY:Honoring Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud
DESCRIPTION:The Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center is pleased to announce a reception on Sunday\, April 29\, in which the Onondaga Nation will honor Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud for his commitment to raising awareness of our proud Haudenosaunee history and heritage. The reception will be from 5-8 p.m. at the Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center in Liverpool\, N.Y. \nSince his inauguration in April 2014\, Chancellor Syverud has worked steadfastly to further enhance the University‘s long established relationship with the Haudenosaunee. Among other measures\, he initiated the University‘s policy of opening public events with an acknowledgement of the Onondaga Nation—“the indigenous people on whose ancestral lands Syracuse University now stands.” The University also flies the Haudenosaunee flag on campus and honors the Haudenosaunee Promise\, a scholarship for Native American students. The University established the scholarship program in gratitude and appreciation for the historical\, political\, and cultural legacies of the Haudenosaunee\, and to honor the bond between the University and its indigenous neighbors. \nChancellor Syverud has also been extremely supportive of the Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center. The University played a major role in the development of the center and the academic collaboration that governs its mission. All proceeds from the reception will support the center’s educational programming and the restoration and stabilization of an exceptional three-panel ceramic masterwork by Mohawk artist Tammy Tarbell. \nThe reception will include heavy hors d’oeuvres and a variety of non-alcoholic drinks. The Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center is located at 6680 Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool. \nTickets are $100 and can be purchased below.  \nFor any questions or for sponsorship information\, please contact Nicole Abrams by email (nicole.abrams@cnyhistory.org) or by phone (315-453-6767).
