SUMMARY:2025 OHA Medal Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:It takes the legacy of many hands to build a community. Since 1945\, the Onondaga Historical Association Medal Award has recognized distinguished contributions to the cause of preserving and interpreting Onondaga County history. \nThe OHA Medal is the highest honor we can bestow upon an individual or organization for contributions made to the cause of preserving and interpreting our heritage. Since OHA is the only general comprehensive history organization in this community\, one might also consider this medal the highest tribute that can be awarded on behalf of the entire Onondaga County community to those who ensure history remains a vital part of our future. \nThe 2025 OHA Medal honorees are the Downtown Committee of Syracuse\, professional sculptor Sharon BuMann\, and the partnership between Franklin Properties\, MacKnight Architects\, and MCK Building Associates. The 2025 OHA Medal Breakfast Ceremony is slated for on May 22 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Syracuse Marriott Downtown. \n  \nFor questions\, contact OHA Director of Development Lorna Oppedisano at lorna.oppedisano@cnyhistory.org or by calling (315) 428-1864 x315.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn Series – Dennis Connors at The Mansion on James
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin Dennis Connors for a Lunch & Learn book signing event on Wednesday\, April 30 at The Mansion on James Street! Along with a book signing opportunity\, Dennis will give a presentation on his work. Tickets for this event can be purchased at TheMansionJames.com/EventCalendar \nCost: $30 \nLocation: The Mansion on James (930 James Street\, Syracuse\, NY) \n  \nAbout The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street: \n\nFrom the 1890s to 1930s\, stately mansions lined Syracuse’s James Street\, their elegant gardens\, architecture\, and streetscapes a point of city-wide pride. The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street combines newly published photographs with histories of the mansions and people that once occupied Syracuse’s most fashionable street. More than just beautiful facades\, the mansions and people who inhabited them represented the cultural life\, political leadership\, industrial growth\, and social reform that animated Syracuse and the nation during this period of opulence. Drawing on photos and rich archival material from the Onondaga Historical Association\, Dennis Connors assembles an architectural and social history of Gilded Age James Street. These ornate homes were widely admired\, drawing visits from Ulysses S. Grant and literary giant Henry James\, but by the 1940s\, many of the homes were demolished to accommodate post–World War II urban development. Tracing the origins and reveling in the splendor of these famous homes\, The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street offers a rare glimpse back in time to a lost era in Syracuse and American history.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening & Lunchtime Lecture on Friday\, November 15
DESCRIPTION:Join OHA Curator of History Robert Searing for a Lunchtime Lecture “Freedom Fighters: Civil Resistance and the Fight Against Slavery in Antebellum Syracuse” at noon on Friday\, November 15\, at Art in the Atrium. \n \nThis presentation examines the work of a small but dedicated group of abolitionists in Syracuse\, N.Y.\, led by Rev. Samuel May and Rev. Jermain Loguen. Loguen\, a man who escaped his own enslavement in Tennessee and settled in Syracuse in 1841\, became one of the era’s most successful and well-known Station Masters on the UGRR. These men and their compatriots helped make Syracuse a center for abolitionist activity and organization and were primary participants in of the era’s most significant acts of civil disobedience\, the Jerry Rescue\, in October 1851. Additionally\, the talk will place the efforts of local reformers in the larger national context of the growing sectional controversies over slavery\, which ultimately resulted in the Civil War in 1861. It ends with a discussion of the National Convention of Colored Men\, which met in Syracuse in October 1864. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. It is part OHA’s programming around the current exhibit at Art in the Atrium\, “Freedom for All: Syracuse’s Colored Men’s Convention of 1864\,” opened in early November and running through the end of the year. \nCNY Art’s Art in the Atrium is located in downtown Syracuse at 201 East Washington Street. Light refreshments will be served. Street and garage parking is available in the nearby area. \nEmail OHA Project Manager for Events and Programs Lorna Oppedisano at lorna.oppedisano@cnyhistory.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Michael Miller Discusses "High Bridge"
DESCRIPTION:On July 14th\, join OHA as we welcome author Michael Miller for a talk on his recently published book\, High Bridge. \nAbout High Bridge: Upstate New York in the mid-19th century is a cauldron bubbling with the lure of fast fortunes\, religious zealotry\, and battles for civil liberties. This fervor centers on the Erie Canal\, which successfully supports scores of villages brimming with opportunity. One such village  Fayetteville\, shapes the lives of two future American leaders – Matilda Joslyn Gage and Grover Cleveland. High Bridge tells the stories of Gage as a young newlywed\, the only child of freethinking abolitionists\, and young Cleveland\, a prankster lad who grows up in the large family of an austere reverend. Despite their different childhoods and world views\, they form an unlikely friendship. Can they combine their skills to solve a mystery and vindicate a Black man accused of murder? \nFor more information about Michael and High Bridge\, visit the author’s website. \nThis event is free with museum admission.
