DESCRIPTION:Spanning from spring to fall\, our Walking & Talking Wednesdays give you the chance to spend your mid-week lunch hour with Curator of History Robert Searing\, listening to some local history as you get in a midday walk around town. \nThe tours will leave from OHA’s downtown museum at 321 Montgomery Street at 12:00 and end in Clinton Square. Each will last approximately 45-60 minutes and cover a wide array of topics\, including abolition\, architecture\, general historical happenings\, and some of the city’s lost historical treasures. Please arrive and check in at OHA’s front desk 10 minutes prior to the start of your tour. \nTour dates are 5/1\, 5/15\, 6/5\, 6/26\, 7/10\, 7/24\, 8/14\, 8/28\, 9/4\, 9/18\, 10/2\, & 10/16 \nThe tours will cost $15 for members and $20 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:Please join the City of Syracuse and Onondaga Historical Association on the steps of Noble Cellar\, the former Wesleyan Church\, on October 4 to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Syracuse’s 1864 National Convention of Colored Men. \nWhen:\nFriday\, October 4\nProgram begins at 11:30 a.m. \nWhere: \nNoble Cellar (the former Wesleyan Church)\n304 E. Onondaga St.\nSyracuse\, NY 13202\nPaid street and garage parking available in the nearby Columbus Circle area \nWhat:\nTo mark 160 years since the historic gathering of 144 Black delegates and speakers\, including Frederick Douglass\, Jermain Wesley Loguen\, Henry Highland Garnet and Edmonia Highgate\, who convened in Syracuse in 1864 to organize and strategize for racial justice and civil rights\, Mayor Ben Walsh will read a proclamation in recognition of this important movement in local history. Other speakers include OHA’s Executive Director\, Lisa Romano Moore\, and Curator of History\, Robert Searing\, as well as Noble Cellar’s managing partners\, Sarah Pelligrini and Rob Zaccaria. Syracuse native and international opera singer Gregory Sheppard will sing the hymn that was performed at the opening of the Convention at the former Wesleyan Church. \nWho:\nThis program is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening & Lunchtime Lecture on Friday\, November 15
DESCRIPTION:Join OHA Curator of History Robert Searing for a Lunchtime Lecture “Freedom Fighters: Civil Resistance and the Fight Against Slavery in Antebellum Syracuse” at noon on Friday\, November 15\, at Art in the Atrium. \n \nThis presentation examines the work of a small but dedicated group of abolitionists in Syracuse\, N.Y.\, led by Rev. Samuel May and Rev. Jermain Loguen. Loguen\, a man who escaped his own enslavement in Tennessee and settled in Syracuse in 1841\, became one of the era’s most successful and well-known Station Masters on the UGRR. These men and their compatriots helped make Syracuse a center for abolitionist activity and organization and were primary participants in of the era’s most significant acts of civil disobedience\, the Jerry Rescue\, in October 1851. Additionally\, the talk will place the efforts of local reformers in the larger national context of the growing sectional controversies over slavery\, which ultimately resulted in the Civil War in 1861. It ends with a discussion of the National Convention of Colored Men\, which met in Syracuse in October 1864. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. It is part OHA’s programming around the current exhibit at Art in the Atrium\, “Freedom for All: Syracuse’s Colored Men’s Convention of 1864\,” opened in early November and running through the end of the year. \nCNY Art’s Art in the Atrium is located in downtown Syracuse at 201 East Washington Street. Light refreshments will be served. DESCRIPTION:Jake Haiwhagai’i Edwards\, Onondaga Eel Clan member\, will give a lecture about the Haudenosaunee contributions to American democracy at the Liverpool Public Library on Thursday\, March 13th\, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. \nThe Haudenosaunee Confederacy – an alliance of the Six Nation Confederacy of the Mohawk\, Oneida\, Onondaga\, Cayuga\, Seneca\, and Tuscarora nations – is the oldest continuous participatory democracy in the world. \nThis event marks the first in a special series presented by the Onondaga Historical Association and the Liverpool Public Library in anticipation of the “A New Agora for New York: Museums as Spaces for Democracy” project that includes the Voices & Votes: Democracy in America exhibit\, coming to the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center from April 18 to May 30. \nThis event is free and open to the public. No advanced registration is required. \n  \n \nVoices and Votes is a Museum on Main Street (MoMS) exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. It’s based on an exhibition by the National Museum of American History. It has been made possible in New York State by the Museum Association of New York. Support for MoMS in New York State has been provided by the United States  Congress and the William G. The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street combines newly published photographs with histories of the mansions and people that once occupied Syracuse’s most fashionable street. More than just beautiful facades\, the mansions and people who inhabited them represented the cultural life\, political leadership\, industrial growth\, and social reform that animated Syracuse and the nation during this period of opulence. Drawing on photos and rich archival material from the Onondaga Historical Association\, Dennis Connors assembles an architectural and social history of Gilded Age James Street. These ornate homes were widely admired\, drawing visits from Ulysses S. Grant and literary giant Henry James\, but by the 1940s\, many of the homes were demolished to accommodate post–World War II urban development. Tracing the origins and reveling in the splendor of these famous homes\, The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street offers a rare glimpse back in time to a lost era in Syracuse and American history.

SUMMARY:Voices & Votes: Freedom for All Lecture
DESCRIPTION:OHA Curator of History Robert Searing will give a lecture on the National Convention of Colored Men that took place in Syracuse on October 4th\, 1864. This event will be held at the Liverpool Public Library on Thursday\, May 29\, 2025\, from 7 pm-8 pm. No prior registration is required. \nThe National Convention of Colored Men took place almost two years after Lincoln’s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation\, three years after the start of the Civil War\, and just a few weeks ahead of the most significant election in the nation’s history. At the time\, African Americans could fight in the Union army\, and were actively recruited\, but could not vote in most regions of the country. \nDuring the convention\, A Declaration of Wrongs and Rights was produced\, outlining the lack of any liberty and the suffering endured by Blacks\, both free and enslaved\, over hundreds of years in colonial America and the United States. Participants included Frederick Douglass\, who was the convention president\, William Wells Brown\, and Henry Highland Garnet. \nThis event is part of a special series presented by the Onondaga Historical Association and the Liverpool Public Library as part of the “A New Agora for New York: Museums as Spaces for Democracy” project that includes the Voices & Votes: Democracy in America exhibit\, coming to the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center from April 18 to May 30. \n  \nVoices and Votes is a Museum on Main Street (MoMS) exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Footsteps in Freedom covers a wide array of topics\, including abolition\, architecture\, and some of the city’s lost historical treasures. Take a stroll down memory lane of the past downtown businesses\, the railroad that traveled through the downtown streets\, and some of the city’s lost historical treasures on the new Heart of Syracuse tour. \nPlease arrive and check in at OHA’s front desk 10 minutes prior to the start of your tour.
