The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street combines newly published photographs with histories of the mansions and people that once occupied Syracuse’s most fashionable street. More than just beautiful facades\, the mansions and people who inhabited them represented the cultural life\, political leadership\, industrial growth\, and social reform that animated Syracuse and the nation during this period of opulence. Drawing on photos and rich archival material from the Onondaga Historical Association\, Dennis Connors assembles an architectural and social history of Gilded Age James Street. These ornate homes were widely admired\, drawing visits from Ulysses S. Grant and literary giant Henry James\, but by the 1940s\, many of the homes were demolished to accommodate post–World War II urban development. Tracing the origins and reveling in the splendor of these famous homes\, The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street offers a rare glimpse back in time to a lost era in Syracuse and American history.

Since 1945\, the Onondaga Historical Association Medal Award has recognized distinguished contributions to the cause of preserving and interpreting Onondaga County history. \nThe OHA Medal is the highest honor we can bestow upon an individual or organization for contributions made to the cause of preserving and interpreting our heritage. Since OHA is the only general comprehensive history organization in this community\, one might also consider this medal the highest tribute that can be awarded on behalf of the entire Onondaga County community to those who ensure history remains a vital part of our future. \nThe 2025 OHA Medal honorees are the Downtown Committee of Syracuse\, professional sculptor Sharon BuMann\, and the partnership between Franklin Properties\, MacKnight Architects\, and MCK Building Associates. The 2025 OHA Medal Breakfast Ceremony is slated for on May 22 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Syracuse Marriott Downtown. \n  \nFor questions\, contact OHA Director of Development Lorna Oppedisano at lorna.oppedisano@cnyhistory.org or by calling (315) 428-1864 x315.

SUMMARY:Voices & Votes: Freedom for All Lecture
DESCRIPTION:OHA Curator of History Robert Searing will give a lecture on the National Convention of Colored Men that took place in Syracuse on October 4th\, 1864. This event will be held at the Liverpool Public Library on Thursday\, May 29\, 2025\, from 7 pm-8 pm. No prior registration is required. \nThe National Convention of Colored Men took place almost two years after Lincoln’s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation\, three years after the start of the Civil War\, and just a few weeks ahead of the most significant election in the nation’s history. At the time\, African Americans could fight in the Union army\, and were actively recruited\, but could not vote in most regions of the country. \nDuring the convention\, A Declaration of Wrongs and Rights was produced\, outlining the lack of any liberty and the suffering endured by Blacks\, both free and enslaved\, over hundreds of years in colonial America and the United States. Participants included Frederick Douglass\, who was the convention president\, William Wells Brown\, and Henry Highland Garnet. \nThis event is part of a special series presented by the Onondaga Historical Association and the Liverpool Public Library as part of the “A New Agora for New York: Museums as Spaces for Democracy” project that includes the Voices & Votes: Democracy in America exhibit\, coming to the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center from April 18 to May 30. \n  \nVoices and Votes is a Museum on Main Street (MoMS) exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. DESCRIPTION:In cooperation with the Marriott Syracuse Downtown\, we conduct historic tours and presentations at the “Hotel Syracuse” on the third Monday of every other month at 11am. Each event will last approximately an hour and a half and will hold 15 people. \nTours begin at the front desk of the hotel\, where your tour guide will meet you. SUMMARY:Reflections on Erie's Waters Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Onondaga Historical Association is proud to participate in a special symposium presented as part of the Erie Canal Museum’s Sloan Lecture Series and in commemoration of the Erie Canal’s bicentennial. Held at the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center\, this event brings together scholars\, authors\, and Indigenous leaders to examine the enduring impact of the Erie Canal on the Haudenosaunee and their ancestral lands. \nThrough three thought-provoking talks\, the symposium will explore the environmental\, cultural\, and political consequences of the canal’s construction—highlighting stories of dispossession\, resilience\, and historical erasure that are too often left untold. \n\nSymposium Schedule: \n\nSunday\, October 5@ 11:00 AM – “Sacred Waters: The Trauma of the Erie Canal”\n\nJake Haiwhagai’i Edwards and Dr. Philip P. Arnold discuss the impact of the Erie Canal on the Haudenosaunee. For millennia\, waterways in Haudenosaunee territories have been profoundly important. In the Haudenosaunee cosmology\, water is sacred as fundamental to all life. Therefore\, while waterways were used for transportation\, as food resources\, and as locations for settlement\, it was widely agreed among Indigenous peoples that they also be protected. The Erie Canal disrupted the natural flow of water\, essentially damming watersheds so as to flow in an east-west direction. As Laurence Hauptman has discussed in Conspiracy of Interests: Iroquois Dispossession and the Rise of New York State\, the creation of the Erie Canal corresponded with the dispossession of the Haudenosaunee. Transformation of the landscape throughout the 19th century had profound environmental effects and traumatic consequences on Haudenosaunee relationships to their lands. \n\nSunday\, October 5@ 1:00 PM – “Clearing Iroquoia: New York’s Land Grab in the 1779 Campaigns of the American Revolution.”\n\nJoin authors Travis M. Bowman—the head of museum collections for the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Bureau of Historic Sites–and Matthew A. Zembo—associate professor of history and military history at Hudson Valley Community College and instructor of American history at Bard Early College—for a talk about their new book\, Clearing Iroquoia: New York’s Land Grab in the 1779 Campaigns of the American Revolution. \nIn 1778\, George Washington\, Philip Schuyler\, army officers\, and New York officials began planning invasions against Iroquoia\, the homeland of the Haudenosaunee and several other allied Indigenous nations. Bowman and Zembo’s Clearing Iroquoia offers a fresh perspective on the Clinton-Sullivan campaign and hard truths about of the dispossession of the Haudenosaunee homeland and American colonialism. \n\nSunday\, October 5@ 3:00 PM – “The Oneidas\, the Best Land\, and the Erie Canal”\n\n“Our children’s hearts are sick\,” mourned Skenandoah when he learned that New York State in 1815 had purchased almost 1200 acres of Oneida land. This tract  was the last piece of Oneida land the state needed to acquire before it built the Erie Canal through the center of the state. I grew up on this tract on our family farm\, which my grandfather once referred to as the best land in Madison County. When I was in high school in the 1970s\, the Oneidas asserted that New York State had purchased their land in violation of federal law and the courts agreed. Through the years of litigation\, confusion\, prejudice\, and revival that followed\, I carried questions about what had happened on the best land and why didn’t I know anything about it. The answers include the Erie Canal and the silencing and erasing of Native voices and presence that accompanied the transformation it wrought on the ancestral land of the Oneidas in central New York. \nSusan A. Brewer is the author of The Best Land: Four Hundred Years of Love and Betrayal on Oneida Territory and other books. After 25 years as a professor of American history at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point\, she retired from teaching and is now an independent scholar who makes her home in the Adirondacks. \n  \nThe symposium is free to attend but registration is encouraged. \n  \nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:Join the Onondaga Historical Association on Wednesday\, November 12 at 7:30 PM in the Wells Meeting Space at the Sky Armory\, Syracuse\, NY for an engaging discussion on the commemoration of America250 in polarizing times. \nIn 2026\, America250 marks the Semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. Activities will be filled with reflections on the conflicts and formative events that shaped the United States and American democracy\, and who we recognize as our heroes. How will communities navigate the diverging narratives of our history as we prepare for this milestone year? History\, education\, and public art have become flashpoints for national and local conflict. How will the story of America be interpreted and discussed in commemorative programs\, events and public spaces? \nTim Phillips\, founder of the global nonprofit Beyond Conflict\, and Monique VanLandingham\, Senior Advisor at the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation\, will share insights from their international work in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
