SUMMARY:Tonto Revisited: Native American Stereotypes Gallery Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:For generations the portrayal of Native Americans has been one of menacing warriors wielding tomahawks\, knives and bows and arrows. This imagery was found in posters\, advertisements\, toys\, sports logos and more. On their own\, these items can seem harmless\, however\, when put together\, the destructive nature of the imagery is apparent. Tom Huff’s collection of stereotypical “Indian Kitch\,” brought together in one exhibit\, will help to dispel the myths surrounding Native Americans and encourage a new understanding of Indigenous peoples. \nExhibit opening reception will be on Thursday\, August 1st from 7 – 9 pm at the Skä·noñh Center in Liverpool. Light refreshments will be available. \nAdmission: $5+

SUMMARY:Witness to Injustice: Unraveling US and Indigenous History
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Skä·noñh Center in Liverpool for an exercise by the Neighbors of Onondaga Nation (NOON) called Witness to Injustice: Unraveling US and Indigenous History adapted from the KAIROS Blanket Exercise. This is a three-hour interactive group exercise that invites participants to experience: colonization\, conquest\, and attempted genocide of the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (the North American Continent). Witness to Injustice is a participatory exercise designed to raise awareness of European conquest and Indigenous resistance and survival through the use of meaningful quotes and blankets representing the lands of Turtle Island. Participants engage in an experiential history lesson designed in a way that can’t be provided by reading a book. To participate in this rich group exercise you will need to reserve a spot and it will cost $12 per participant. \nThere is a maximum of 35 people for this group exercise.  It will be held on July 18th\, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. SUMMARY:Skä·noñh - Great Law of Peace Center Garden Talk
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, the Skä·noñh Center established a native plant garden within the confines of the French stockade. The goal of the garden is to showcase plants of ecological\, cultural\, and historical value to Onondaga Lake and surrounding areas. Plants in the garden were grown from wild-collected native seed or occurred naturally (“volunteers”). The suite of garden plants also provides an important habitat for pollinators. \nJoin us at the Center on July 13th from 1 – 4 pm to discuss the garden and ask Catherine Landis\, Ph.D. in Ecology\, and Rick Kulibert\, Nursery Owner\, any questions you may have about the garden and to highlight plants of interest. \nThis event is free with admission to the museum. \nRain date for this event will be July 20th.

DESCRIPTION:Join Crazy Horse Family Elder\, Floyd Clown Sr.\, and Author William Matson for a discussion and book signing on Thursday\, July 11th from 7 to 9 pm at the Skä·noñh- Great Law of Peace Center in Liverpool.  Floyd Clown Sr. will share some of the family’s history that had been shared with him by means of oral tradition. What had become the widely accepted and standard biography of Crazy Horse\, is retold in the book\, “Crazy Horse: The Lakota Warrior’s Life & Legacy\,” by William B. Matson\, in which the family clarifies some inaccuracies about their famous ancestor’s life and legacy. Floyd Clown Senior\, one of the three sole administrators and spokesmen of the Crazy Horse estate\, will also talk about the family’s generational stories\, Lakota treaties\, what it means to be Lakota\, court cases\, and probates for ancestry. \nThis event is open to the public with a sliding scale entry fee to help continue programs such as this. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase at the Skä·noñh Center Gift Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) Medal will be awarded to Syracuse Stage\, the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority\, and Syracuse.com | The Post Standard to recognize their outstanding and meritorious service to local history\, and to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Onondaga County. \nThis year’s event will take place at the Grand Ballroom in the beautifully restored Marriott Syracuse Downtown (formerly the Hotel Syracuse) on Thursday\, May 9th\, 2019 from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The OHA Medal is the highest honor that this organization can bestow upon an individual for contributions made to the cause of preserving and interpreting our heritage. Since OHA is the largest and longest standing institution in this community devoted to conserving and presenting our history\, one might also consider this medal the highest tribute that can be awarded on behalf of the entire Onondaga County community to those that ensure history remains a vital part of our future. \nThis is only the 22nd time the OHA Medal has been awarded since its inception in 1945. The OHA Medal is a two-sided\, bronze piece struck in 1894 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of Onondaga County. \nRegular tickets to the OHA Medal Breakfast are $50 and Patron tickets are $125. SUMMARY:From Gilded to Gustav: Victorian and Arts & Crafts Era in Onondaga County Reception
DESCRIPTION:Replacing the two year long Downton Comes Downtown exhibit\, the Victorian Era and Arts & Crafts exhibit will highlight several of Syracuse’s major contributors to the Arts and Crafts movement\, 1900-1920s\, as well as feature many fine examples of period clothing\, architecture\, and furniture of the Victorian Era in Syracuse\, 1837-1901. \nItems of the Victorian Era will feature many fine examples of period clothing\, architecture\, and furniture. The exhibit will also include several pieces crafted by Gustav Stickley (who founded and published The Craftsman magazine in Syracuse in 1901)\, with his brothers L. and J.G. Stickley\, in addition to drawings and stained glass windows produced in Henry Keck’s workshop. Other items include architectural drawings by Ward Wellington Ward\, and pieces from the Onondaga Metal Shops. \nIn many respects\, the Arts and Crafts movement was a rebuke of the ornate styling\, designs\, and increasing mechanization of production in the Victorian period. The displays will allow for museum patrons to see these contrasting styles up close. \nJoin us on April 25th for the opening reception of this exhibit. From 4pm to 6pm enjoy the exhibit with light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Kokom Lena of the First Nation Algonquin"
DESCRIPTION:For 20 years\, Syracuse photographer Michael Greenlar documented four generations of Algonquins in the bush of Quebec\, Canada. His work focuses on the matriarch\, Lena Nottaway\, and the knowledge she passed on through her 15 children. Lena taught Kokomville how to utilize every element of the environment to become a self-sustaining community. The series of photographs is a testament to the cultural survival of the Algonquin people of Barrier Lake\, La Vérendrye Park\, Quebec\, Canada. Despite broken treaties and clear-cut logging\, these First Nation people continue to use the land as their traditions dictate. \nThe exhibition is in partnership with Art Rage Gallery. Both exhibits have unique photos of Greenlar’s documentation.\n\nGreenlar will be speaking beginning at 3:15pm. His book will also be for sale at the Center’s gift gallery.
