SUMMARY:Witness to Injustice: Unraveling US and Indigenous History
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 13th: Join us at the Skä·noñh Center in Liverpool for an exercise by the Neighbors of Onondaga Nation (NOON) called Witness to Injustice: Unraveling US and Indigenous History adapted from the KAIROS Blanket Exercise. This is a 2-hour interactive group exercise that invites participants to experience:  colonization\, conquest\, and attempted genocide of the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (the North American Continent). Witness to Injustice is a participatory exercise designed to raise awareness of European conquest and Indigenous resistance and survival through the use of meaningful quotes and blankets representing the lands of Turtle Island. Participants engage in an experiential history lesson designed in a way that can’t be provided by reading a book. To participate in this rich group exercise you will need to reserve a spot and it will cost $12 per participant. \nThere is a maximum of 35 people for this group exercise.  It will be held on December 13\, 2018 from 6 to 8:30 pm. DESCRIPTION:The Haudenosaunee Arts and Craft fair will be held at the Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center on Saturday\, November 17th from 10 am to 4 pm. The Center will be filled with Haudenosaunee vendors selling their hand-made products both upstairs and down. There are a variety of mediums being featured\, including paintings\, pottery\, jewelry\, baskets\, soapstone\, silverwork\, leatherwork\, and more. \nThe event is being held indoors and is free and open to the public. Theresa ‘Bear’ Fox will perform twice\, once at 11 am and again at 3 pm. MacMillan\, writer of Disasters of Onondaga County\, for a book signing and to discuss his work. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Author via Arcadia Publishing: Neil MacMillan was born and lives in the Syracuse area. He is a U.S. Navy veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm and a Vietnam-era veteran. Neil holds a BA in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in history and creative writing. He has worked in a variety of fields. He is the author of Wicked Syracuse: A History of Sin in Salt City and Haunted Onondaga County. \nAbout the book via Arcadia Publishing: The city of Syracuse and Onondaga County have a long and storied history of natural and man-made calamity. Although often considered a moderate weather region\, Mother Nature has not spared it from destruction. A tornado devastated picturesque Longbranch Park in 1912\, and the rare Hurricane Hazel reached Onondaga’s borders in 1954. A fire ravaged Syracuse’s famed Bastable Block building in 1923. During a children’s concert and festival\, the floor of the Central Baptist Church collapsed\, tragically claiming scores of lives and injuring more than one hundred. Author and historian Neil MacMillan charts the history of Onondaga County catastrophes.

The lecture will discuss what Onondaga Lake was like before becoming one of the most degraded lakes in the nation. Catherine will also discuss the early ecology of Onondaga Lake and the surrounding areas based on historical and other records that were kept. Along with the unique and rich animal and plant life around the lake and surrounding areas. She will also review the Indigenous people that lived here for thousands of years following seasonal patterns of abundance of plants\, fish\, and animals. \nThe lecture will be held on Wednesday\, October 17\, 2018 from 5 to 6:30 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join the OHA Book Club on Saturday\, September 15th for Upstate Travels: British Views of Nineteenth-Century New York\, by Roger M. Haydon\, Executive Editor at Cornell University Press. \nAbout the book (via Cornell University Press):  After the War of 1812\, British travelers\, intensely curious about the United States\, poured across the Atlantic. Hundreds published their impressions in lively\, quarrelsome books that infuriated and enchanted Americans and Britons alike. Most of these volumes have been out of print for a century or more. \nHere Roger Haydon brings together forty-two excerpts from one generation of these travelers’ accounts\, between 1815 and 1845\, when New York State was a microcosm of the country. In his introduction and prefaces to each selection he describes the kinds of tourists who visited and how they traveled\, assessing the general accuracy of their accounts\, and provides pertinent background information. \nThe readings follow the period’s most popular itinerary—up the Hudson Valley through Albany and its environs on to the spas and the Champlain Valley\, across the state via the Erie Canal\, the Genesee Valley\, and the Finger Lakes to the Niagara Frontier\, and down into the Southern Tier—to record in vivid detail the generation that saw New York State come to dominate the nation. In Upstate Travels\, these travelers’ voices are accessible again to entertain and inform all who are interested in New York history. Bibliography\, index\, and dozens of period illustrations are included.

MacMillan. \nAbout the book: From the halls of Syracuse University to the quiet neighborhoods of Fayetteville and Marcellus\, the communities of Onondaga County have a haunted history. Some sites are hotbeds of paranormal activity\, like Syracuse’s Woodlawn Cemetery\, the Jamesville Penitentiary and Split Rock Quarry\, where a blast killed several workers. Visitors at the Clay Hotel debate whose ghost walks the halls of the former German beer house and restaurant. Patrons of the Ancestor’s Inn in Liverpool have also encountered unregistered and unwelcome guests. After Albert Fyler murdered his wife in a jealous rage\, their spirits refused to leave the home they shared. Even the iconic Syracuse City Hall cannot rid itself of the otherworldly. Local author Neil K. MacMillan delves into this eerie past to uncover Onondaga County’s most haunted locations. \nAbout the author: Neil K. MacMillan holds a BA in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in history and creative writing from SUNY Empire State College. He has been an American Civil War re-enactor for eighteen years. He is a veteran of the navy with combat service in the Gulf War. He lives in Syracuse with his wife Peggy and belongs to the Onondaga Historical Association.

DESCRIPTION:Details:\n\nTaking on the Doctrine of Discovery: What are our Next Steps?\nDate: August 18-19\, 2018\,\nTime:  9:00am-5:00pm on Saturday (with a banquet 6:00pm-9:00pm) and 9:00am-1:00pm on Sunday\nPlace: Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center\, Liverpool NY in Onondaga Nation Territory\nTickets: $100 per person\nSpeakers: Coming Soon (visit IVI’s website for updated information)\nSponsors: Indigenous Values Initiative\, American Indian Law Alliance\nSummary:\n\nWe are excited to announce the conference “Taking on the Doctrine of Discovery\, What Are Our Next Steps?” at the Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center\, Saturday and Sunday (18-19 August 2018).  A conference fee of $100 will cover the rental of the Center\, lunches for both days and a dinner of traditional Haudenosaunee foods on Saturday night.  This event is organized and sponsored by the Indigenous Values Initiative. \nIn 2014\, before the Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center had officially opened\, we held a first conference titled “The Doctrine of Discovery: After Repudiation\, What Next?”  About 40 delegates from different faith traditions attended.  This year’s conference builds on the 2014 meeting.  The Skä·noñh Center is now open and it is a good context from which to draw the values of the Haudenosaunee to affect positive change.  As with the previous meeting\, we will first to learn about the devastating impacts of the Doctrine of Discovery first hand from the Haudenosaunee\, to understand its history\, and then to share strategies for addressing this 500+ year-old ongoing human rights violation.  Then we will hear from one another and the ways in which religious and faith communities are pushing back against the Doctrine of Discovery.  There will be a traditional foods banquet on the evening of Saturday the 18th followed by screening of the film “Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation” and panel discussion. \nHotel information to follow. \nTo sign up for this event\, please visit the Indigenous Values Initiative event page by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Rock of the Marne Monument Rededication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:On July 15th\, join OHA and the Syracuse community as we rededicate the Rock of the Marne Monument in Billings Park 98 years after it was erected (1920) and 100 years after the Second Battle of the Marne (1918). The monument is on the corner of South Salina and East Adams streets. \nThe ceremony will celebrate the replacement of a once lost plaque\, the unveiling of a new plaque which commemorates the 100th anniversary\, and a program featuring Sean Kirst\, General Quintas 3rd Infantry Division\, and Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens. \nThis free event will also include musical entertainment and refreshments for sale by Gannon’s Ice Cream and Donny’s Dogs. \nAbout the monument: On July 15\, 1920\, the “Rock of the Marne” monument\, created by Roland Hilton Perry was dedicated by men of the 38th Infantry Regiment\, 3rd Infantry Division\, in Billings Park at South Salina\, South Warren and East Adams streets. The unit earned the nickname “Rock of the Marne” because of its resolve to hold its ground at the Second Battle of the Marne River near Paris\, France on July 15\, 1918 in the face of the last massive German offensive of World War I. \nThe 38th Infantry Regiment chose to donate the monument to the city because men of that unit were trained at the State Fairgrounds\, near Syracuse.

DESCRIPTION:This page features tickets for Saturday\, June 23rd\, 5:30pm through 7:15pm\nStroll under Oakwood Cemetery’s shade and take in compelling stories from those who have gone before and now rest here during this year’s Ghostwalk at Oakwood Cemetery. \nHistoric Ghostwalks presented by the Onondaga Historical Association are led by guides to locations in neighborhoods\, buildings\, and cemeteries where actors in costume portray individuals from Onondaga County’s past. The “ghosts” reveal their lives in 12 to 15 minute vignettes\, giving personal insight to those who have preceded us. \nTickets are $15 for the general public and $12 for members. You will receive you ticket confirmation in an email and your name will be on a list at the check-in desk. \nThe Oakwood Ghostwalk has left the valley and is at a new location! Please enter the cemetery at the main entrance on Comstock Ave. Look for the signs pointing the way.
