SUMMARY:Judaic Heritage Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception for From Laying the Foundation to Forging Ahead: Jewish Contributions to Syracuse & Onondaga County on October 24th from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe exhibit\, located on the first floor of the Onondaga Historical Museum\, emphasizes the Jewish role in advancing the social\, religious\, economic\, and political fabric of Syracuse and Onondaga County\, and is divided into four sections: Community\, Business\, Entertainment\, and Athletics. For instance\, Communityfocuses on the old Jewish neighborhood\, synagogues\, and people. Business concentrates on small to large Jewish-owned retail stores\, factories\, and other businesses such as Flah’s\, Fleischman’s\, SYROCO\, Oberdorfer Foundry\, and United Radio.  Entertainment highlights local and nationally-known song and comedy writers\, authors\, actors\, and singers such as Harold Arlen who wrote Somewhere Over the Rainbow\, Sime Silverman who founded Variety magazine\, and the Shubert brothers who amassed the largest theatrical empire in America.  Athletics features several local Jewish athletes and sports teams such as Dolph & Danny Schayes\, Myer Prinstein\, Dave Brodsky\, and the Young Men’s Hebrew Association’s championship basketball team. \nOHA would like to thank Howard Port\, Mike Moss\, and Linda Alexander for their knowledge of the content and much-welcomed assistance\, Ann Eppinger Port for her proofreading skills and editorial comments when reviewing the exhibit text\, and everyone from the Jewish community who contributed photographs and text for the exhibit.  OHA also would like to thank Alex Lyon & Son\, Inc.; The Jerome & Phyllis Charney Foundation; Arlene & Jerome R. SUMMARY:The Sacred Waters of the Haudenosaunee and the Trauma of the Erie Canal
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 21 at 1:00 PM at the Skä•noñh- Great Law of Peace Center [6680 Onondaga Lake Pkwy\, Liverpool\, NY 13088]\nFor millennia\, waterways in Haudenosaunee territories have been profoundly important.  In the Haudenosaunee cosmology\, water is sacred as fundamental to all life.  Therefore\, while waterways were used for transportation\, as food resources\, and as locations for settlement\, it was widely agreed among Indigenous peoples that they also be protected.  The Erie Canal disrupted the natural flow of water\, essentially damning watersheds so as to flow in an east-west direction.  As Laurence Hauptman has discussed in Conspiracy of Interests: Iroquois Dispossession and the Rise of New York State\, the creation of the Erie Canal corresponded with the dispossession of the Haudenosaunee.  Transformation of the landscape throughout the 19th century had profound environmental effects and traumatic consequences on Haudenosaunee relationships to their lands. \nJake Edwards is a citizen on the Onondaga Nation and sits on the Council of Chiefs.  He has extensive knowledge of Haudenosaunee environmental history and often speaks throughout the world on Haudenosaunee values. A sovereign nation on 7\,300 acres south of Syracuse\, Onondaga is a proud member of the Haudenosaunee (“People of the Long House”)\, an alliance of six Native American nations sometimes referred to as the Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations.  Other members include the Mohawk\, Oneida\, Cayuga\, Seneca\, and Tuscarora nations. \nPhilip P. Arnold is Associate Professor and Chair of Religion Department at Syracuse University as well as core faculty in Native American and Indigenous Studies.  He is the Founding Director of the Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center (www.skanonhcenter.org/).  His books are Eating Landscape: Aztec and European Occupation of Tlalocan (1999); Sacred Landscapes and Cultural Politics: Planting a Tree (2001); The Gift of Sports: Indigenous Ceremonial Dimensions of the Games We Love (2012) and Urgency of Indigenous Religions (University of New Mexico Press\, forthcoming).  He is a founding member of Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON)\,(www.peacecouncil.net/NOON/index.html) and established the Doctrine of Discovery Study Group (www.doctrineofdiscovery.org) He is also the President of the Indigenous Values Initiative(www.indigenousvalues.org).

Searing\, these four informal\, monthly sessions will focus on selected readings that deal with various aspects of the war\, from the battlefield to the home-front and how the Great War fundamentally altered the course of warfare\, geo-politics\, and the lives of ordinary people across the world. All 4 of our meetings will take place inside the gallery housing OHA’s World War I exhibit\, which includes a wide variety of 3-D objects and artifacts from our collections in addition to an incredible array of photographs and wartime images.

DESCRIPTION:This month’s OHA Book Club will feature a discussion with author Leigh Fought\, Associate Professor of History at Le Moyne College\, about her book\, Women in the World of Frederick Douglass. Douglas Egerton\, author of\, Thunder at the Gates: The Black Civil War Regiments That Redeemed America\, will also be discussing and signing his book.  \nAbout the book (via Amazon): “In Women in the World of Frederick Douglass\, Leigh Fought illuminates the life of the famed abolitionist off the public stage. She begins with the women he knew during his life as a slave: his mother\, from whom he was separated; his grandmother\, who raised him; his slave mistresses\, including the one who taught him how to read; and his first wife\, Anna Murray\, a free woman who helped him escape to freedom and managed the household that allowed him to build his career. Fought examines Douglass’s varied relationships with white women-including Maria Weston Chapman\, Julia Griffiths\, Elizabeth Cady Stanton\, and Ottilie Assing–who were crucial to the success of his newspapers\, were active in the antislavery and women’s movements\, and promoted his work nationally and internationally. She also considers Douglass’s relationship with his daughter Rosetta\, who symbolized her parents’ middle class prominence but was caught navigating between their public and private worlds. Late in life\, Douglass remarried to a white woman\, Helen Pitts\, who preserved his papers\, home\, and legacy for history.” \n \nAbout the book (via Amazon) : In Thunder at the Gates\, Douglas Egerton chronicles the formation and battlefield triumphs of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry and the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry-regiments led by whites but composed of black men born free or into slavery. He argues that the most important battles of all were won on the field of public opinion\, for in fighting with distinction the regiments realized the long-derided idea of full and equal citizenship for blacks. \nTheir books are available at the Onondaga Historical Association’s Gift Gallery museum store.

SUMMARY:Tuesdays on the Towpath: Onondaga Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, September 19th as OHA hosts Tuesdays on the Towpath and explore Onondaga Lake’s history. \nThis is a free recreational guided bike ride for riders from 8-80 years old. \nWe will meet at the Griffin Visitor Center (106 Lake Drive\, Liverpool 13088) at 6:00 pm. All rides start and end in the same location and finish by dark. Helmets are required. Call Jon Zella (428-1864 extension 315) for more information. \nRides are free and open to the public. \n\nMore about Tuesday’s on the Towpath \nTuesday is the day to be out on the Erie Canalway Trail in the Albany and Syracuse areas\, with organized group rides in both areas providing fun introductions to social cycling. \nAcross the Canalway Trail System\, local cyclists and cycling groups use the trail for outings of varied length and intensity. Some cyclists are just out to enjoy the view\, while others are looking to burn calories or train for an event such as a century ride or self-supported bike tour. Whatever your style\, there’s plenty of room for whatever type of cycling you’d like to do on the Erie Canalway Trail – with nearly 300 miles of off-road route and a variety of trail surfaces. \nThe Tuesday events are guided rides\, generally on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. They use either the Old Erie Canal State Park section of the Erie Canalway Trail (ECT)\, on roads that follow the route of the Old Erie Canal through downtown Syracuse and the Inner Harbor\,  or on trails connected to the ECT including the Oneida Rail Trail. Most rides are between 8 and 10 miles\, with stops along the way to talk about Canal features or historic sites. The Tuesday rides attract recreational riders of all ages and abilities\, and on all types of bikes. When possible\, local museums keep special hours for rides. After the rides\, the group heads to local establishments to “test” the local food and craft beverages. \nAccording to CLCBM Executive Director Chris O’Neill\, the ride series has been a great success. She points to two main reasons: it serves the recreational rider\, an under-served market\, and provides a fun link between local cultural heritage\, outdoor recreation\, and area bike shops. Over the years\, Tuesdays on the Towpath has drawn support from Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor\, Parks & Trails New York\, Syracuse Bicycles Shop\, and Mello Velo Bike Shop. An ongoing partnership with the Erie Canal Museum provides historical credibility. Beginning in 2014\, rides became a partnership with Old Erie Canal Community Working Group (OECCWG)\, with communities and organizations alternating as hosts and guides for the weekly rides.

For questions\, call 315-428-1864 x.313. \nThe Fair’s beginnings: \nIn February 1832 the New York State Agricultural Society was founded in Albany by a group of farmers\, legislators\, and others to promote agricultural improvement and local fairs. In spring 1841\, with the promise of an annual state subsidy\, the society planned the nation’s first state fair\, subsequently held on 29-30 Sept 1841 in Syracuse. There an assembled 10\,000-15\,000 people heard speeches by notables and viewed animal exhibits\, a plowing contest\, and samples of manufactured goods for the farm and home. The second New York State Fair\, held in Albany in 1842\, ushered in an era of growth and travel for the institution. During the 1840s the fair’s directors increased attendance and revenues by adding horse racing and other forms of entertainment. From 1842 to 1889 the fair traveled among 11 different cities—Albany\, Auburn\, Buffalo\, Elmira\, New York City\, Poughkeepsie\, Rochester\, Saratoga Springs\, Syracuse\, Utica\, and Watertown—before permanently settling in Onondaga Co in 1890.

DESCRIPTION:The Camillus Erie Canal Park will be celebrating the legacy of the Erie Canal that changed the face of our country. As the boats travel along the mile section from Sims Store to the Aqueduct\, there will be a series 10 tableaux accompanied by narration depicting canal history.  This will be a unique experience\, which is believed to never been done before along the historic canal or present day barge canal. \nIn addition guests can look forward to a day filled with family orientated activities\, that represent the canal era and provide a glimpse of life along the waterway. The Camillus Solvay Geddes Rotary group will also hold their annual 5k walk/run Mule Skinner Race that will benefit many community organizations. \nIn the entertainment court\, you can enjoy the Thornden Morris Dancers and The Onondaga Historical Association\, who will feature a two man show called “Sluices\, Locks and Hoggees.” The audience will participate in the adaptation of “Who wants to be a millionaire.” \nAcross the canal\, children can enjoy “KIDS STUFF.” They will have the opportunity of dressing up and trying their hand at old fashion games\, rolling hoops and challenge their friends to checkers. Each year we choose MAKE AND TAKE projects representing the canal era. A Home Depot team brings kits of a household item for youngsters to build. Everyone has fun with rock and face painting. \nAmong the vendors will be representatives of old fashion crafts\, spinning and weaving\, chair caning and wood-turning. \nAt the Steam-up\, visitors will be amazed to hear the whistle from Syracuse China and watch the fly wheel of the corlis engine slowly turn. The Lock demonstration will be open. SUMMARY:2017 OHA Medal Breakfast Honoring OHA Curator of History Dennis Connors and Journalist\, Author\, & Public Speaker Sean Kirst
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 OHA Medal will be awarded to OHA’s Curator of History Dennis Connors and Journalist\, Author\, and Public Speaker Sean Kirst to recognize their outstanding and meritorious service to local history\, and to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Onondaga County. This year’s event will take place at the Persian Terrace in the beautifully restored Marriott Syracuse Downtown (formerly the Hotel Syracuse) on Thursday\, May 4th\, 2017 from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM. \nThe OHA Medal is the highest honor that this organization can bestow upon an individual for contributions made to the cause of preserving and interpreting our heritage.  Since OHA is also the largest and longest standing institution in this community devoted to conserving and presenting our history\, one might also consider this medal the highest tribute that can be awarded on behalf of the entire Onondaga County community to those that ensure history remains a vital part of our future. \nTickets for this event are $50 per person or $400 for a table of 10 and can now be purchased over the phone by calling 315-428-1864 x315. DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll join our partners for the 2017 presentation of the Organ Crawl\, the signature event of the Cathedral Square Neighborhood Association\, on Sunday afternoon\, April 23\, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Three world-renowned organists will delight the senses by playing the majestic organs at Plymouth Congregational Church\, St. Paul’s Syracuse\, The Downtown Episcopal Church\, and Park Central Presbyterian Church. The listening tour will begin at Plymouth Congregational Church promptly at 1:30 pm\, and conclude with a reception at the Park Central Presbyterian Parish House at 3:30 pm. \nTickets may be purchased in advance (by clicking here or by calling Alice at 315-470-1953) for $12 until 12:00 noon on Thursday\, April 20. \nOn the day of the event\, tickets may be purchased with cash or check for $15\, prior to the start of the first performance at Plymouth Congregational Church. \nEach church will feature one organist\, who will play for 25 minutes\, taking the audience through a tour of musical selections.
