The session will take place at the Onondaga Historical Museum Theater at 321 Montgomery Street in downtown Syracuse beginning at 3:00pm on Tuesday\, September 12th. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\nNote: This is not a book signing.  \nLater that evening\, at 7:30pm at John H. SUMMARY:The History of the Great New York State Fair
DESCRIPTION:Come see historical photographs from the collections of the Geddes Historical Society and listen to Susan Millet tell the stories of the Great New York State Fair. \nThe program begins at 2:00 pm and the cost is $5 at the door. For questions\, call 315-428-1864 x.313. \nThe Fair’s beginnings: \nIn February 1832 the New York State Agricultural Society was founded in Albany by a group of farmers\, legislators\, and others to promote agricultural improvement and local fairs. In spring 1841\, with the promise of an annual state subsidy\, the society planned the nation’s first state fair\, subsequently held on 29-30 Sept 1841 in Syracuse. There an assembled 10\,000-15\,000 people heard speeches by notables and viewed animal exhibits\, a plowing contest\, and samples of manufactured goods for the farm and home. The second New York State Fair\, held in Albany in 1842\, ushered in an era of growth and travel for the institution. During the 1840s the fair’s directors increased attendance and revenues by adding horse racing and other forms of entertainment. From 1842 to 1889 the fair traveled among 11 different cities—Albany\, Auburn\, Buffalo\, Elmira\, New York City\, Poughkeepsie\, Rochester\, Saratoga Springs\, Syracuse\, Utica\, and Watertown—before permanently settling in Onondaga Co in 1890.

SUMMARY:"A Voyage through 200 Years of Erie Canal History"
DESCRIPTION:The Camillus Erie Canal Park will be celebrating the legacy of the Erie Canal that changed the face of our country. As the boats travel along the mile section from Sims Store to the Aqueduct\, there will be a series 10 tableaux accompanied by narration depicting canal history.  This will be a unique experience\, which is believed to never been done before along the historic canal or present day barge canal. \nIn addition guests can look forward to a day filled with family orientated activities\, that represent the canal era and provide a glimpse of life along the waterway. The Camillus Solvay Geddes Rotary group will also hold their annual 5k walk/run Mule Skinner Race that will benefit many community organizations. \nIn the entertainment court\, you can enjoy the Thornden Morris Dancers and The Onondaga Historical Association\, who will feature a two man show called “Sluices\, Locks and Hoggees.” The audience will participate in the adaptation of “Who wants to be a millionaire.” \nAcross the canal\, children can enjoy “KIDS STUFF.” They will have the opportunity of dressing up and trying their hand at old fashion games\, rolling hoops and challenge their friends to checkers. Each year we choose MAKE AND TAKE projects representing the canal era. A Home Depot team brings kits of a household item for youngsters to build. Everyone has fun with rock and face painting. \nAmong the vendors will be representatives of old fashion crafts\, spinning and weaving\, chair caning and wood-turning. \nAt the Steam-up\, visitors will be amazed to hear the whistle from Syracuse China and watch the fly wheel of the corlis engine slowly turn. The Lock demonstration will be open. DESCRIPTION:On April 5th\, 2017 at 6:00 pm\, the Onondaga Historical Association\, in cooperation with Syracuse University Press\, will host a book talk and signing book with author Laurence Hauptman on his book\, An Oneida Indian in Foreign Waters: The Life of Chief Chapman Scanandoah\, 1870-1953. \nThe event will take place at the Skä•noñh-Great Law of Peace Center on Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool\, New York. \nAbout the book: Chapman Scanandoah was an outsider at the primarily African American Hampton Institute where he was educated in the late 1880s and early 1890s; one of the very few Native Americans in the US Navy from 1897 to 1912; an Oneida with no land or political rights on the Onondaga Reservation\, where he resided for much of his life; a litigant in the white man’s court attempting to prevent the loss of the last remaining Oneida lands in the Empire State; a Native American inventor earning patents in the age of Thomas Edison; one of the founders of the Indian Village at the New York State Fair; and a valued employee and mechanic working for major companies in Schenectady and Syracuse. DESCRIPTION:Join us March 30th at the North Syracuse Public Library as OHA’s Curator of History\, Dennis Connors\, presents on Gustav Stickley and Syracuse’s Arts & Crafts Legacy. \nThis program explores the great traditions that developed early in the 20th century that made Syracuse a center for the national Arts & Crafts Movement. The lecture reviews the story of Gustav Stickley\, but also touches on the contributions of local architect Ward Wellington Ward\, stained glass craftsman Henry Keck and the artists at Syracuse China. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Beneath the Surface: The Storied History of Onondaga Lake at the Palace Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The film\, Beneath the Surface: The Storied History of Onondaga Lake\, covers the amazing history of the lake and the remarkable impact it has had on our American Way of Life over the past six centuries. From the birthplace of the Great Law of Peace and the great Haudenosaunee Confederacy\, the first representative democracy in the west\, to the production of the country’s largest supply of some of its most important commodities and innovative products\, to the Resort Era and the WPA project that built Onondaga Lake Park\, to the most polluted lake in America\, to one of the largest Superfund Clean-up sites in history\, to a tourist attraction and the center of economic\, cultural\, recreational\, educational\, and natural development in our community. \nThe second screening will take place on March 7th\, 2017 at the Palace Theatre in Syracuse’s Eastwood neighborhood. \nThere will be a Producer’s Reception prior to the screening of the film beginning at 5:00 pm\, which includes an open-bar cocktail-hour from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm (which includes beer and wine)\, dinner (5:30 pm -6:30 pm)\, and VIP seats to view the film. Fuller Torrey. \nVia Amazon: A definitive history of the Loomis Gang who terrorized central New York in the 1800’s. Well-educated and from aristocratic New England families\, George and Rhoda Loomis raised their children to be outlaws. Robbery\, horse thieving\, bribery\, arson\, counterfeiting\, kidnapping\, rape and murder-the Loomis Gang did it all until they were brought down by Constable Jim Filkins and United States Senator Roscoe Conkling. \nAbout the author: E. Fuller Torrey\, M.D.\, is a research psychiatrist specializing in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. He is the executive director of the Stanley Medical Research Institute\, the founder of the Treatment Advocacy Center\, a professor of psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences\, and the author of twenty books. He lives in Bethesda\, Maryland.
