SUMMARY:Book Talk: "To Have A Tomorrow" with author Gene Fisch
DESCRIPTION:Onondaga Historical Association is pleased to invite the community to a free public lecture and book signing\, featuring Gene Fisch and his new book\, To Have A Tomorrow: A True Story. Join us at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday\, January 7th at the organization’s comprehensive history museum at 321 Montgomery Street in Downtown Syracuse. There\, you’ll be able to pick up a copy of To Have A Tomorrow from our Gift Gallery\, get it signed\, and listen to the author’s insights about the book. \nA note from the author’s website: “This book is the story of what my family and I experienced in one of the most terrifying and devastating of times— the period just before and during the cataclysm that was World War II\, when my first home\, Poland\, and her people were caught between the aggression and atrocities of the Nazis in Germany and the cruelty and state-sponsored violence of the Soviet Union’s occupations\, deportations\, relocations\, deaths by starvation\, freezing and mass executions\, concealed from worldwide media during the first twenty-two months of the Second World War. Most compelling about our survival\, was not that a family of six survived intact three brutal occupations\, even while one of three Polish citizens were left behind in silent graves\, it is how my parents kept us alive during those terrible times—never betraying those values embedded in their souls\, their faith\, their love of country\, love of family\, and love of life—at a time in history that witnessed an allout attempt at the destruction of thirty-five million Slavic citizens of eastern Poland. The story follows our lives into the immediate post-war years as displaced persons in Germany and\, finally\, as refugees in the United States.”

SUMMARY:A Pocketful of Progress Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:We’re launching a new exhibit\, A Pocketful of Progress: A Retrospective Look at the Machines Found in our Smartphones! This new exhibition opens on Thursday\, March 3rd at 5:30. Come join us downtown at the Onondaga Historical Museum to explore this fascinating new display of machines from the past 150 years which performed functions that\, today\, can be done on a smartphone. The impressive array of machines\, many which originated right here in Syracuse\, offer a stark juxtaposition to the incredible technological tool you carry every day in your purse or in your pocket. \nUp for a double feature? The A Pocketful of Progress exhibit opening is taking place just after a book talk the same evening. Author M.C. Antil will be discussing his book\, Floor Burns: Love\, Passion and the 1967 Syracuse All-City Championship. This work is a non-fiction account of a high school championship basketball game\, and “love letter” to our city. \nThe is a free event! Please RSVP to ohamuseum@cnyhistory.org if you will be coming to one or both of these events! For the safety of all our staff and patrons\, you must show proof of vaccination in order to attend. \nThank you to Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli (NYS\, 129th Assembly District) for providing us the support to help make this exhibit possible. Onondaga Historical Association’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:"Floor Burns" Book Talk with Author M.C. Antil
DESCRIPTION:Join OHA as we welcome M.C. Antil\, author of Floor Burns: Love\, Passion and the 1967 Syracuse All-City Championship. The book has been described as “a sprawling\, affectionate…portrait of a city being transformed by the 1960s\, the people who lived there\, and the game they loved”. This work is a non-fiction account of a high school championship basketball game. \nFloor Burns is a basketball story\, to be sure.  But it is also a “virtual love letter” to Syracuse\, the story of a small working-class city\, its people\, and the turbulent times they shared. \nCome to the Onondaga Historical Museum on March 3rd to listen to M.C. Antil’s book talk and learn about the story of the 1967 Syracuse All-City Championship. The event\, from 4:30 to 6:30\, includes an author presentation\, refreshments\, and the chance to browse our Gift Gallery. Of course\, we’ll also have plenty of copies of Floor Burns ready for the author to sign! \nWant more history? Enjoy the second half of this double feature\, the gallery opening of our new exhibit\, A Pocketful of Progress: A Retrospective Look at the Machines Found in our Smartphones! The gallery opening will take place at the museum directly after the book talk\, and celebrates this new\, technology-focused exhibit. A Pocketful of Progress demonstrates the advancements we’ve made in technology in the past 150 years. It showcases a wide range of machines – many of which were built right here in Syracuse – that have been necessary to complete the myriad tasks now done on our smartphones. \nThe is a free event! Please RSVP to ohamuseum@cnyhistory.org if you will be coming to one or both of these events! For the safety of all our staff and patrons\, you must show proof of vaccination in order to attend. \nOnondaga Historical Association’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:Ladies with a History Ghostwalk - July 16th
DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about the private lives (and deaths) of those of the female persuasion in the Salt City? Select ladies from our previous Ghostwalk events are returning to share stories about themselves and of the Syracuse of their day. \nThe tours are within the historic Oakwood Cemetery\, starting every 15 minutes from 6:00 to 7:30 and lasting about an hour and half. Please enter the cemetery through the East Colvin Street entrance\, closest to I-81. There will be signs to follow through the cemetery. No paper or digital ticket will needed for check-in at the old chapel. Please arrive 10-15 before your tour to allow enough time for parking and check-in. \nBook your spot to see these ghostly ladies today!
